Hamed Darab is an Iranian poet, playwright, and literary journalist whose work occupies the intersection of Persian classical tradition and contemporary political literature. As one of the last students of the late Simin Behbahani — widely regarded as the foremost Persian lyric poet of the twentieth century — Darab received a formative grounding in the ghazal form that has remained central to his poetic practice alongside free verse.
His literary career spans two decades of critical engagement with the politics of culture in Iran. As a journalist and literary researcher, he contributed to some of the most significant publications in Iranian cultural life, including Mehrnameh, Tajrobeh, Shargh, Arman, and Hamdalī, where he served as literary editor. His interviews and analytical essays — distinguished by their depth and the caliber of their interlocutors — have become important documents of contemporary Persian literary history.
Darab is the author of three unpublished collections:
• Āyeh-hāye pas az Rehlat (Verses After the Passing) — a ghazal collection from the 1380s (2000s), formally banned by the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.
• Gusheh-ī dar Dastgāh-e Feshār (A Corner in the Pressure System) — ghazals and free verse from the 1390s (2010s).
• Dar Sālon-e Entezār barāye Dozakh (In the Waiting Room for Hell) — a collection of free verse poetry.
The suppression of these works by state censorship is itself a measure of their political and literary weight. The blanket prohibition on Āyeh-hāye pas az Rehlat places Darab among a lineage of Iranian writers whose voices have been systematically excluded from the official literary sphere.
Beyond the page, Darab’s public interventions have carried their own significance. His appearance on the program Cheshm-e Shab Rowshan on Iran’s Channel Four marked the first time in years that the names of Samad Behrangi, Ahmad Shamlou, and Siavash Kasrāī were spoken aloud on national television — an act that generated considerable public resonance and discussion.
Darab’s work draws on the full breadth of Persian literary heritage while remaining insistently attentive to the political conditions that shape — and constrain — literary production in contemporary Iran.
